The recommended initial dose is 40 mg administered either intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM). This may be followed by 20 mg or 40 mg every 6 to 12 hours as needed, not exceeding 80 mg per day. The IV injection can be given rapidly into a vein or existing IV line, while the IM injection should be administered slowly and deeply into the muscle.
