Mirena consists of a small, flexible T-shaped frame with a reservoir containing 52 mg of levonorgestrel. Upon insertion into the uterus, it releases levonorgestrel at an initial rate of approximately 20 micrograms per day. This release rate decreases over time. Mirena is effective for up to 8 years for contraception and up to 5 years for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding. It functions by thickening cervical mucus, inhibiting sperm movement, reducing endometrial lining thickness, and partially suppressing ovulation..
